I’m Going to Break Your Heart
with Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida
by Megan Hollyoake
Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida are Canadian icons, award-winning musicians and celebrated humanitarians. They’re also humble, vulnerable, and generous human beings who have dedicated their lives to be advocates for one another and everyone they’re connected to.
Their new memoir, I’m Going to Break Your Heart, and Canadian-wide Break Your Heart Tour reflects a lifetime of lessons learned, together, and how their journey can help shape and support yours.
The Story Behind the Memoir
Chantal and Raine have dedicated their memoir to the concept of finding each other over and over again.
When speaking with Chantal about how the memoir came to be, she explained that their individual story isn’t as unique as people perceive it to be; the reality is that we are all individuals, experiencing a collective of human emotions at different times.
Chantal openly elaborates on this perspective, saying, “As artists who have written their own material, we have learned [through the years] that the greatest way to connect with others and provide comfort is through honesty. When Raine and I open up with joy, grace and self-assuredness about the struggles of long-term coupling, people feel seen and know they are not alone. It is crazy to think that we’re pioneers for sharing but it feels so right and natural because we have been so honest in our music for decades.”
When discussing the emotional journey of going back in time, reliving moments, and capturing memories on paper, Raine says that the book turned into a great way to keep the conversation going between them.
“It is a different medium where one can be clear with their own narrative,” explains Raine. “[Working on the book] turned into a beautiful skill-building exercise for us because we didn’t micromanage each other’s narrative. We didn’t try to fix or adjust what the other got wrong in the details. Letting each other share stories that were monumental to shaping our individual lives created amazing opportunities for us to show unconditional love, without judgement, toward the other. This is what interdependency looks like: we are each our own person, and this requires true love, self-awareness and grace.”
Life Lessons
Every single chapter of I’m Going to Break Your Heart includes a valuable takeaway, including the importance of “showing up” and practicing CPR: catch, pause and repair. Amongst every story and lesson learned along the way, Chantal explains that the heart of the book is about repeatedly choosing your partner.
“I have invested so much in our life together. Yes, I am not the same Chantal that I was when we first got married – perhaps I am wife two, wife three and maybe even wife four in all these iterations of myself – but I would rather be me than someone else. I look forward to being a grandparent someday and being with my partner to the end. Our life (and history) together is something to fight for until the very end.”
The Importance of Communication
To quote Raine, “Change isn’t a revolution, it’s a conversation.” These words are foundational when discussing the art and importance of communication in relationships.
When we look to our partner for help – perhaps to navigate through a situation, find the right answers, or re-establish a sense of balance within a hectic schedule – we need to be able to openly communicate, pivot accordingly, and create equality together.
“We have to be smart here: no one is changing completely, and that may not even be what we want. What we should be focused on are small pivots: a form of change in the dynamic. If you’re looking for equity in your relationship, maybe we tell our partner, ‘I have two lessons on Thursdays, so I need you to take the kids for 2.5 hours.’ This time for our own self care is very healthy; giving them insight into what we do helps shift the dynamic towards being an equal partner,” says Raine.
Break Your Heart Tour
The natural extension of the I’m Going to Break Your Heart memoir is the Break Your Heart Canadian tour. From BC to Newfoundland, and a stop in Winnipeg along the way, Chantal and Raine will be introducing a one-of-a-kind performance that’s all about connection and collaboration – together and throughout their audience.
Chantal says that this tour is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, and you will feel transformed by the end of the show, saying, “There is a lot of laughter and joy. It’s not scripted at all, so who knows… it could get heavier on certain nights, but we love to laugh. And with our differences in personalities, we get to bring all of that onto the stage and connect with audiences.”
Chantal and Raine’s Break Your Heart tour will take place at the Burton Cummings Theatre on November 25, 2026. To buy tickets and VIP passes to the show, visit www.raineandchantal.com.
