Evolving Backyards for Growing Families

The backyard has quietly become one of the busiest “rooms” in the house. It’s no longer just a spac e for summer lounging, but a place where basketballs echo after dinner, kids turn every surface into an obstacle course and couples reignite their competitive streak over a pickleball match. Making a Splash with Rishona Hyman

“This is where the magic happens.”

These few words hand painted by Winnipeg artist Kal Barteski on a wall at Aqua Essence Swim Academy carry a lot of meaning at this full-service swim space located in Winnipeg’s Kenaston Common.

The brainchild of founder Rishona Hyman, a.k.a. “the Head Fish,” Aqua Essence is Manitoba’s only private swim school that has a pool with a deep end. This distinction is one of the many reasons more than 1,700 students a week – ranging in age from four months to adult – take lessons here, gaining confidence in their swim abilities and to thrive in other areas of their lives.

The Weird Freedom of Midlife

There’s a strange thing that happens to women in midlife that nobody really prepares you for. Somewhere between raising kids, surviving careers, managing relationships, paying bills, caring for everyone else, and quietly carrying the emotional weight of life for decades, something begins to shift.

You stop caring as much. Not in a sad way. In a freeing way. And honestly? It’s a little disorienting at first.

Sitting Down with Nahla Moon

There are some places that become more than just a venue – they become part of a person’s story. For Winnipeg singer-songwriter Nahla Moon, that place is Park Alleys. Tucked beneath its neon glow and familiar soundtrack of strikes, spares, and friendly conversation, the historic bowling alley has become what she affectionately calls her “living room” – a gathering place that has supported her through life’s highs and lows and connected her to a vibrant creative community.
